When our founder was trying to sell his boat, he first started with CraigsList. (Hey, it's hard to beat free.) It seemed like the people looking for boats on CraigsList where hoping to get something really cheap. All he received were low-ball offers. Then his listing expired and disappeared.
Next, he decided if he was going to sell his boat, he may have to spend a little money. So he listed it with eBay. After paying around $80 to list his boat on eBay, the auction ended without meeting his reserve price.
So he talked to a few boat dealers and brokers and checked the blue book value for his boat and trailer. Was he charging to much? No, but he may have to sit on his listing for several months to get his asking price given this economy.
That be began a search for a company that would allow him to list his boat for sale for one flat fee and keep his ad active until the boat sold. Plus the owner of boatsforsale.com wanted $230,000 for the domain name.
So our founder set out to create a simple to use, affordable boat listing service focused on delivering the following functionality:
